Q. Why did you apply to join PKF Littlejohn?
At the time I had just finished my degree at The University of York in Accounting, Business Finance and Management, and was looking to get a job in accountancy. Having done a few modules in tax at uni, I found it a lot more interesting than the opportunities within accountancy, and more relevant to the real world. Also, having spoken to my brother working within the Big 4, I had chosen to steer clear of this and with Littlejohn’s recent join into the PKF umbrella, I saw it as a good sized firm with the availability of being exposed to bigger issues earlier in my career still with the backing of a top 20 accountancy firm.
Q. What has been your greatest achievement since joining?
Every year at Christmas the whole firm participates in ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ for charity, and I am proud to claim I have won best dressed for 2 years running.
Q. What does your role currently entail?
Currently I am a Semi- Senior within the Private Client Tax Department, and the main contact for a portfolio of over 100 clients. My primary role is to ensure my clients make their statutory requirements for filing Tax Returns, but on top of this, with my increased experience, I have a large amount of advisory projects I prepare for managers, as well as analysing future tax planning opportunities. As well as this, I also support the team below me, aiding with their own development and training, handing down work when necessary.
Q. What's the best thing about working for PKF Littlejohn?
The exposure to interesting and challenging work from the start. Rather than feeling like just another ‘cog’ in the system, I have exposure to great variety of work, and should a client have a query, I am relied upon to answer this rather than pass it to the relevant individual.
Q. What are the opportunities for professional and personal development?
Throughout my time here I have been studying towards my professional tax exams, I am now qualified with the ATT and am currently progressing through my exams to become a Chartered Tax Adviser. On top of this, with the opportunities in the department to expand into various aspects of tax and relevant courses open for us to attend, the opportunities to better and further my career are open.
Q. What broader corporate and/or industry initiatives are you involved in?
I have been drafted into the teams that help complete some of our tax publications, and aided in the production of our 2015/16 and 2016/17 ‘Tax Facts’ cards, which give a brief explanation to changes from each budget. I have also had the opportunity to go to a Summer City Beer Festival I found, representing the firm and discuss what PKF can offer to new and potential clients.
Q. What are you plans for the future?
I am currently focused on completing my exams and becoming a Chartered Tax Adviser, after this I hope to continue my progression within the team, managing my own portfolio.
Q. Tell us a fascinating fact about yourself?
I once turned down the opportunity to be in a Take That cover band called ‘Take This’ to perform within another group called ‘Soul Flow’ as a beatboxer.
